Documents required for traveling with a pet

The airline checks the carrier and the reserved seat. The border veterinary inspection verifies the animal's identity and documentation. There are two separate checks. You must pass both of them.

The rules depend on the airline, the aircraft, and the destination country. We confirm the pet's seat before issuing the ticket.

The Correct Order

The ISO 11784/11785 microchip must be implanted before the relevant rabies vaccine is administered. If the vaccine was administered before the microchip was implanted, the animal must be revaccinated after identification. Otherwise, the titer and certificate may be invalidated.

  1. 01

    Microchip

ISO transponder, readable. The number is entered in the passport or certificate.

  2. 02

    Rabies vaccine

After the chip. Valid after the waiting period specified in the package insert, usually 21 days after the first vaccination.

  3. 03

Title: If You're Leaving from a Third Country

A blood test at least 30 days after vaccination, performed at an accredited laboratory. Threshold: 0.5 IU/mL.

  4. 04

    Certificate of Movement

EU passport for travel within the EU. From Moldova to the EU: health certificate / TRACES, not just the passport.

Within the EU, including from Romania

For non-commercial travel between member states: microchip, valid rabies vaccination, European pet passport. A vaccination certificate is not required. The airline may request a health certificate issued a few days prior to travel. If you have a layover outside the EU, the rules of the transit country also apply.

The United Kingdom and other destinations outside the EU

The UK is no longer part of the EU passport system. Entry has its own rules, including tapeworm treatment for dogs, which must be administered within a strict timeframe prior to arrival. The European pet passport is not, in and of itself, a ticket for entry. We’ll confirm the requirements for your specific destination, not based on a generic list.

Short Questions

  • Is the vaccination record from the local veterinarian sufficient?

Not for an international flight. You'll need electronic identification and the travel document required by your destination: an EU passport or an official certificate.

  • How recent does the health certificate need to be?

Usually within the last 10 days before departure, sometimes even closer to the departure date. The date is set by the veterinary authority and the airline, not some arbitrary timeframe we come up with.
